Ruben Amorim has been warned he could have just months remaining as Manchester United boss, with Oliver Glasner being backed as his potential replacement. The Portuguese manager has faced mounting pressure in recent weeks following United’s worst start to the season since 1992-93.
Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Chelsea at Old Trafford in the Premier League provided some relief as his squad delivered a determined display. However, former United goalkeeper Ben Foster reckons it’s merely a question of when, not if, Amorim receives his P45 after claiming his side have failed to click this term.
He’s also endorsed Crystal Palace chief Glasner as his natural successor following the Eagles’ excellent start to the campaign, despite losing several crucial stars during the summer transfer window.
Speaking on his Fozcast podcast, the ex-Wrexham shot-stopper said: “I think he [Amorim] has got a couple months left, probably. He’ll go through a bad little run of two or three or four games in a row where he loses and eventually they’ll go, ‘Right, we’ve had enough now, it’s obviously not working.’
“I just watch them, and I don’t really see any kind of cohesion. Somebody who would be good for Man United is Glasner. He’s only got nine months left on his contract at Palace. My only worry about it is that Man United are so sick and tired of playing three at the back.
“If they go and get Glasner and he goes, ‘Right, I’m playing three at the back,’ they’ll go, ‘Nah, come on mate. This isn’t going to work.’ For this guy to have lost five star players though and for Palace still look like they’ve got better. They’re fifth in the league.”
Glasner featured amongst numerous candidates previously identified on a shortlist of potential replacements for Amorim should he be dismissed from his role. Betting companies also highlighted Andoni Iraola, Gareth Southgate, Marco Silva and Mauricio Pochettino amongst the other contenders.
Amorim was recently linked with a return to Portugal to take charge of Benfica amidst the continuing speculation surrounding his future at United. Those rumours were quashed when former Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho accepted the role last Friday.
The ex-Sporting CP boss was subsequently questioned about Mourinho’s appointment during a post-match interview following United’s victory over Chelsea.
“He’s the best Portuguese manager, and that won’t change,” Amorim told Portuguese channel DAZN. “He’s always been a very special person in our football, but also in the world, and he opened all the doors for us.
“I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for Jose Mourinho. I think it’s going to be a lot of fun for you all in Portugal, and we’re going to enjoy it.”
