We brought you the news last week that first cited Arsenal’s approach for Amadou Onana and now that is being backed up by other sources as the rumour mill heats up.

Sacha Tavloieri reported today that Arsenal had entered intensive talks with Everton over the signing of Onana and that things could move quickly. The rumours only intensified after the players agent was spotted in London.

At only 22, Onana has demonstrated impressive technical skills, positioning him as a potential replacement for Thomas Partey in Arsenal’s midfield. His abilities caught the Gunners’ attention during his stint at Lille, and their interest persisted through his move to Everton, with Arsenal considering a bid last January.

With Partey now 30 and facing fitness challenges, Mikel Arteta is keenly aware of the need for a younger, Premier League-acclimated midfielder. Onana, who shares similarities with Partey’s playing style, emerges as an ideal candidate. However, there’s an ongoing debate about whether Arsenal should prioritise a midfielder over a forward at this juncture.

While Mohammed Elneny has been a dedicated player for Arsenal, the quality gap between him and Partey is increasingly evident, especially as Arsenal strives to keep their top-table status. Elneny’s future at the club seems uncertain, possibly paving the way for new talents.

Onana’s versatility in midfield, akin to Declan Rice, is a significant asset. Capable of playing both as a number six and a number eight, he offers Arteta valuable options for in-game rotations and tactical flexibility.

However, questions remain about how Arsenal would fund a deal for Onana this month. Given their proximity to Financial Fair Play (FFP) restrictions, the club might have to navigate financial constraints creatively. They could opt for a modest initial payment or consider selling players who are drawing interest, like Eddie Nketiah, to raise funds. This financial balancing act will be crucial for Arsenal to secure Onana without compromising their FFP standing.
