Report: Liverpool and Arsenal both want ‘incredible’ £40m midfielder, but now he might sign a new contract

The race to sign Leicester’s Youri Tielemans seems to be back on, amid reports both Liverpool and Arsenal want to land the Belgian in January.

Reports in recent weeks have continued to link Tielemans with a move away from Leicester. Liverpool are credited with holding an interest in him, while Arsenal are known admirers as well. Indeed, it was only last week that Fabrizio Romano spoke of how the Gunners had a great chance to sign him.

However, despite Tielemans’ contract running down and expiring next summer, he might yet sign new terms. Well, that’s the hope of Brendan Rodgers anyway.

Speaking this week in his press conference, Rodgers admitted he’s not quite given up on Tielemans.

“Youri provides the team with a great know-how in the game. He’s a wonderful player to work with. I’ll just continue to work and develop his game while he’s here, however long that is. I’d love him to sign another deal and continue his journey here. We’ll see in the coming months,” Rodgers told the Leicester Mercury.

It’s also reported that Rodgers has no intention of letting Tielemans go in January. It seems the Leicester boss would rather see the season out with his man, rather than cash in.

Tielemans joined Leicester for a reported £40m back in the summer of 2019. He scored the winning goal in the FA Cup final for the Foxes, but has since failed to put pen to paper on fresh terms.

TBR’s View: Liverpool and Arsenal could both do with Tielemans

Whoever ends up signing Youri Tielemans is getting themselves quite the player.. We are talking about a seasoned Belgian international here with serious qualities.

Tielemans would slot in nicely at both Liverpool and Arsenal. The Reds need a new midfield altogether while Arsenal, with so many exciting young players, need to keep improving.

Certainly, in terms of free transfers, they won’t come much better than Tielemans. And if he does go to Liverpool or Arsenal, then he instantly improves both squads.
