Ruben Amorim Boosted by Lisandro Martinez’s Availability for Manchester United Debut

Ruben Amorim, Manchester United’s new head coach, has received a timely boost ahead of his first match in charge against Ipswich Town later this month. Key defender Lisandro Martinez, who was at risk of suspension after accumulating four yellow cards in the Premier League this season, will be available for the match.

Martinez, who joined United from Ajax in July 2022, narrowly avoided a suspension that would have ruled him out of the match. Premier League rules stipulate that players who collect five yellow cards in the first 19 matches of the season face a one-game ban. His most recent caution came in United’s 1-1 draw against Chelsea, following a late tackle on Cole Palmer. Despite a VAR review, the decision stood, adding to his earlier yellow cards from games against Liverpool, Tottenham, and Crystal Palace.

A mainstay in United’s starting lineup, Martinez has featured in 10 of the club’s 11 league matches this season, approaching his total number of league appearances from the previous season, which was affected by injuries. Under Amorim, who is expected to employ a 3-4-3 formation, Martinez will likely play on the left side of a back three, utilizing his left-footed skill and ball distribution.

Martinez’s return is especially significant as United heads into the match against Ipswich with defensive depth uncertain due to the unavailability of Leny Yoro and Harry Maguire. The status of both players for the November 24 fixture remains unclear. Alongside Martinez, other defenders like Matthijs de Ligt, Jonny Evans, and Victor Lindelof will be key figures in strengthening the backline.

In midfield, Kobbie Mainoo is also close to a suspension after collecting four yellow cards. Should he receive a further yellow before reaching 10 in United’s first 32 league matches, he will face a two-game ban, though yellow cards in the Premier League do not carry over to Carabao Cup or FA Cup matches.

As Amorim prepares to make his mark at Old Trafford, the return of Martinez provides much-needed stability to a defense that will be crucial in the team’s bid for consistency and success under their new head coach.
