Erik ten Hag and Manchester United are ruing a dismal performance in at the weekend which ended the team’s unbeaten start to 2024.
One thing we have learned about Manchester United this season is that Old Trafford is no fortress.
A defeat at home to Fulham was the latest home defeat, with United losing 2-1.
After scoring an equalising goal through Harry Maguire in the 89th minute, United poured forward to try and net a winner, and were caught out, with Alex Iwobi netting a decisive goal for Fulham in stoppage time.
Erik ten Hag blames individual mistake
It happens often late in games when you commit men forward to try and score a winner or equaliser, you risk getting exposed at the other end, with players dragged out of position.
Speaking after the game, Erik ten Hag said there was one Manchester United player he considered to be out of position, which led to Fulham’s goal.
What frustrated Ten Hag was that United had a chance to pin Fulham in, and failed to do so, allowing them to build an attack.
He did not divulge names, it wouldn’t be fair to, and so we won’t speculate over who it was either.
Ten Hag explained, via MUTV: “They come out from a throw-in near the corner and it shouldn’t happen.
“We have them under pressure but one player is in the wrong position. So, as a team, we should manage that so everyone is in the right position.
“We have experience on the pitch. We let them escape and that was avoidable. It can’t happen when an opponent has a throw-in.”
Leaders needed at Manchester United
Ten Hag made a point that while one player was out of position, that individual alone was not responsible.
He pointed out that it was the team’s responsibility to manage the situation and ensure everybody was in the right spot.
This is where you need not only your captain to step up, but all the team’s leaders. And with Casemiro, Luke Shaw and Lisandro Martinez not on the pitch through injury, you wonder whether Manchester United have enough strong personalities in the team.
United fans were frustrated with the performance, and even a late winner for the Red Devils would have masked a woeful display.
