‘So good’: Arsenal now want a player who Pep Guardiola says can ‘smell’ goals
According to CalcioMercatoWeb, Arsenal have an interest in Barcelona’s Ferran Torres.
This report actually states that Arsenal bid for Torres in the summer, but while their initial offer was knocked back, Arsenal’s interest is still there.
Of course, Torres is a player that is likely to suit Arsenal to a tee. After all, he has previously worked with Mikel Arteta’s mentor – Pep Guardiola, so he shouldn’t struggle to adapt to Arteta’s quasi-Pep system if he were to join Arsenal.
It would be interesting to see where Torres would be used in Arteta’s team. Naturally a winger, Guardiola has actually previously praised the young attacker for his abilities as a number nine.
WHAT’S BEEN SAID?
Guardiola heaped praise upon Torres after a hat-trick against Newcastle.
“Yeah, he can be a number 9. We will use him, we used him and he was brilliant. His rhythm, especially defensively he has improved a lot. The game at Palace, he makes a turn [in his season] – so good. The movement he makes as a striker, for the third goal, it hits the bar and where it goes, he knew it,” Guardiola said.
“The smell, the strikers know, intuitively where it will arrive. He has this talent and the first goal is fantastic. Very pleased.”
TWO BIRDS WITH ONE STONE
Bringing Torres to the Emirates could be a very clever move from Arsenal.
Think about it, the Gunners need to add depth both on the wings and up front, and Torres could kill two birds with one stone in that regard.
On top of that, it shouldn’t be too difficult to get him out of Barcelona either. Between Robert Lewandowski, Memphis Depay, Ousmane Dembele, Ansu Fati and Raphinha, Barca are absolutely stacked in attack and just six months after his arrival at Camp Nou, Torres has fallen down the pecking order.
Arsenal would be wise to push for this transfer in January.
