Lee Sharpe has insisted that Luke Shaw is one of the “best left-backs in the world,” despite sending a warning to Erik ten Hag over the Manchester United star.
Luke Shaw has been Manchester United’s mainstay left-back under manager Erik ten Hag, despite the England star struggling with injuries in his career.
The 29-year-old United left-back missed the second half of the 2023-24 campaign due to injury, but Shaw was included in England’s Euro 2024 squad in the summer.
Shaw missed the opening stages of the Three Lions’ campaign in Germany before playing in the quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final of Euro 2024.
Sharpe’s warning over Shaw
Despite featuring for England at Euro 2024, Luke Shaw suffered a major setback after he was ruled out of action for the opening of Manchester United’s season.
Shaw suffered a calf injury in pre-season training in the summer and has missed the opening four Premier League matches of the season.
Erik ten Hag has turned to Diogo Dalot as a makeshift left-back in Shaw’s absence, with back-up full-back Tyrell Malacia still a long-term absentee for United.
Speaking to The Daily Express, Lee Sharpe praised United star Shaw and the incredible influence that the England international can show on the pitch.
However, the former United star raised concerns about Shaw’s injury record and believes that it will be a “long-term problem” for the Three Lions defender.
“Looking more long-term, I’d also mention Luke Shaw,” Sharpe said.
“He’s one of the best left-backs in the world when he’s fit, but he can’t seem to stay fit. I think that might be a long-term problem for him.”
Man Utd boss Ten Hag on Shaw update
Speaking ahead of the 7-0 thumping of Barnsley on Tuesday at Old Trafford, Erik ten Hag insisted that Shaw is “progressing” after his injury setback.
“First, Luke Shaw, he’s progressing but not ready yet to be selected,” he said on Monday at his pre-match press conference.
“Of course, we have a plan in our head when he can be ready, but you are always dependent on how the progress will go.
“You can’t think, you can’t make a suggestion [of a return date] because there are so many factors why a plan can accelerate or slow down.”
