The Manchester Evening News can reveal United have agreed a fee to appoint Amorim and the club are now working on a deal to bring his Sporting first-team coaches to Old Trafford.

Carlos Fernandes, 29, and Adelio Candido, 28, followed Amorim from Barga to Sporting in 2020 and they have been crucial in his success at the Jose Alvalade Stadium.

Tuesday’s statement from Sporting read: “Manchester United has expressed an interest in hiring coach Ruben Amorim, with the board of directors of Sporting referring to the terms and conditions set out in the employment contract in force between the company and the coach.

“Specifically the respective termination clause and the amount of €10million. Manchester United has expressed an interest in paying Sporting the amount of the aforementioned clause.”

Amorim has previously said if he becomes Bobby Robson then Fernandes is ‘his Jose Mourinho’. Amorim is set to become the sixth permanent United manager since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.

Erik ten Hag was sacked after overseeing United’s worst start to a Premier League campaign and Amorim will be tasked with moving the team towards the European qualification places.

Amorim guided Sporting to their first league title in 19 years during his first full season in charge in 2020/21. After finishing second and fourth in the league in the following two campaigns, Amorim delivered another league title in 2023/24, with Sporting winning the title by 10 points.
