‘Unacceptable,He played rubbish’: Jamie Carragher tears into 27-year-old Manchester United player after what he did this week

Jamie Carragher has had a go at Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana for his performance against Galatasaray this week.

The Cameroon international had a night to forget in the Champions League in Turkey. He made two howlers and cost his side the win. Carragher has claimed that Onana’s performance was ‘unacceptable’.

Jamie Carragher blasts Manchester United’s Andre Onana
Manchester United signed Andre Onana from Inter Milan in the summer for £47.2 million (Sky Sports).

The 27-year-old had an amazing campaign in Italy last season, helping the Nerazzurri reach the final of the Champions League.

Onana’s performances convinced Erik ten Hag that he was the right man for Manchester United, and the Red Devils allowed David de Gea to leave and signed the Cameroonian in his place.

That move, so far, has been a disaster. Onana has made plenty of mistakes already, the latest of which came on Wednesday in Manchester United’s 3-3 draw against Galatasaray.

Speaking about the errors, Jamie Carragher had a real go at Onana and branded his performance as ‘unacceptable’.

He wrote in The Telegraph: “Great goalkeepers turn defeats into draws and draws into narrow victories, especially at the biggest clubs. For a team hunting the biggest trophies, the art of being a world-class keeper is to do the little you are required to do brilliantly well.

“Unfortunately for Onana, at the start of his United career he has been responsible for turning victories into draws, and draws into defeats. United’s perilous Champions League predicament is a direct consequence of his errors. Onana cost the team home and away against Galatasaray and was poor against Bayern Munich in the opening group game. Yes, he made a last-minute penalty save against Copenhagen at Old Trafford, but the numerous minuses far outweigh that one positive.

“The performance in Turkey was unacceptable for a Manchester United goalkeeper. You would not expect an Under 18 keeper to make the basic handling error for Galatasaray’s second goal. If a youth keeper was promoted and played like Onana on Wednesday evening, he would probably never feature for the first team again.

“Onana has cost United too many cheap goals. The hope that the worst was behind him after a poor start to his Old Trafford career has been blown out of the water and Wednesday was a huge step backwards. Onana has already developed a reputation for being a liability. That will take a long time to overcome and reverse.”

Onana needs to turn things around for Manchester United
The worst part of being the goalkeeper is that you rarely get away with your mistakes.

Andre Onana has learnt that more than ever this season, and the 27-year-old’s errors have been getting bigger and bigger since he joined Manchester United.

The Cameroon international needs to pick himself up very quickly. He is a fantastic goalkeeper, there is no doubt about that, but if he doesn’t stop making mistakes that are costing his team, he will be moved on.

Manchester United take on Newcastle United next in what will be a very difficult game. It will be interesting to see how Onana will respond after his errors this week.
