‘UNSELFISH’: MICHAEL OWEN SAYS ARSENAL 24-YEAR-OLD IS ‘RARELY’ GIVEN THE BALL AFTER 3-0 WIN
Michael Owen has praised Ben White for his ‘really unselfish’ play following his overlapping runs during Arsenal’s comfortable 3-0 win at Brentford on Sunday.
The former striker added that White is ‘rarely given the ball’ when he overlaps Bukayo Saka, or whoever is out on that right wing, as was proven to be the case yesterday.
With Mikel Arteta’s side looking for that third goal to kill the game off, Saka ran into space on the right-hand side, with Arsenal and Brentford bodies ahead of him.
White then proceeded to make a lung-busting run outside of Saka, which drew Rico Henry towards the versatile defender.
That allowed Saka to cut inside and find Fabio Vieira in space outside of the box, before the summer signing unleashed an incredible shot into the back of the net.
“Fabio Vieira actually gave him the eyes,” said Owen. “We all thought he was going for that top corner.
“Ben White, he makes some great overlapping runs. Rarely is he given the ball. This time, he does contribute to the goal (White’s overlapping run drew Rico Henry away from Saka). Really unselfish play, he (Saka) cuts in and then (Vieira) takes it away.”
It’s probably been a long time since Arsenal fans have felt this way because the mood around the camp is far different to the one they experienced 12 months ago.
The last time Arteta and his players visited Brentford, they got smoked and proceeded to start the season in an abject fashion.
But, it just goes to show what patience can do in life because, so far, Arsenal are being rewarded for it as they sit top of the Premier League table heading into the international break.
