Mikel Arteta would have almost prepared his half-time message when his plans were thrown into disarray by Leandro Trossard’s red card against Manchester City.
The Belgian star fouled Bernardo Silva before launching the ball away after the referee’s whistle – and was quickly shown a red by Michael Oliver. There was a sense of disbelief among Arsenal’s players as they protested the decision with their team-mate slow to leave the field.
Arteta was involved in his own conversation with the fourth official and pulled his jumper over his head, such was his frustration. The Spanish coach pulled his top halfway off in the pouring Manchester rain before attempting to plead his case
The Gunners boss was clearly far from happy with the decision but could do little but wave his arms by the dugout as he was left to reconsider his plans as late as the eighth minute of stoppage time. Arteta did manage to regain his composure, however.
While the anger in Arsenal’s side was palpable, as Trossard trudged off the pitch, Arteta still managed to console his player with a cuddle after he crossed the byline. The Arsenal forward was the taken away by Arteta’s coaching staff, with fury still in his eyes.
Nevertheless, the Gunners still went into half-time with a lead. The north London side were able to hit back after going a goal behind due to Erling Haaland’s strike. Riccardo Calafiori equalised with an impressive strike on his Premier League full debut.
Gabriel was then able to score his second goal of the season when heading in from Bukayo Saka’s corner. The Brazilian had put his side into the driving seat in the first minute of stoppage time.
It is the second time this season Arsenal have seen a player sent off for a second yellow card having kicked the ball away. Declan Rice was given his marching orders against Brighton after being judged to have done so ahead of a Seagulls’ free kick.
