Christian Eriksen has backed Rasmus Hojlund to help solve Manchester United’s wastefulness in front of goal this season.
Marcus Rashford was the leading goalscorer at Old Trafford last term and he almost single-handedly shouldered the burden of scoring the team’s goals, which is why signing a striker was the priority in the summer transfer window.
Hojlund was identified as a young forward with vast potential and he was signed in a deal worth £72million from Atalanta. The centre-forward was given his full debut against Brighton on Saturday afternoon and he thought he’d got off to the perfect start with a goal before half-time, only for VAR to intervene and disallow his close-range effort.
Eriksen spoke to MUTV after the game and he explained the absence of clinical finishing has been a major weakness this season, but he backed Hojlund to help solve the team’s biggest problem by scoring more goals.
“I think we started really strong. We were very much front-footed and we surprised them a bit with our game plan, but when they scored from their first chance it made it a lot easier for them,” he said.
“We lost the momentum and I thought we had it back just before half-time with the disallowed goal, but we didn’t have the luck or the clinical part to get back and it’s difficult.
“It was unlucky for Rasmus, his debut here, it was disallowed, but I’m sure he’ll turn it around and score a lot more goals. We tried to come back and with how they play, there was a lot of running from our side.
“In the end, I still think we had enough chances to come back and we just didn’t take them. It’s been like that this season so far, I think if we changed that, the games would be a lot easier to play.”
Eriksen was asked about the debutants, Hojlund and Sergio Reguilon, and added: “I think they played very well. Sergio was aggressive and front footed and of course, Rasmus had a goal disallowed, but there are some details they have to learn.
“We have to learn about them, but that only comes with the games, so hopefully there’s a lot more for a better connection.”
