“Yes”: José Enrique admits £50m man would suit Liverpool, but he’s now joining Arsenal
José Enrique has taken to Twitter to make a claim about Gabriel Jesus and Liverpool, with the striker set to join Arsenal.
WHAT’S THE STORY?
Well, the Brazil international is keen to reunite with Mikel Arteta at the Emirates Stadium, with the Gunners expected to up their bid to around £50m – The Times believe a deal is close.
However, Enrique – who made 99 appearances for Liverpool – believes Jesus would do well at Anfield under Jürgen Klopp.
The Spaniard conceded that the Reds have no room left in their frontline for the South American, but if they did, he feels Jesus would be a great addition to Jürgen Klopp’s attack.
The 36-year-old also makes the very valid point that Pep Guardiola wouldn’t sell to Klopp – there is no way Manchester City ever strengthen Liverpool, in our view, unless the player forces a move to Merseyside.
In 41 appearances last season, Jesus scored 13 goals, while also providing 12 assists.
The Manchester City No.9 is capable of playing out wide, or in the centre, and his arrival at Arsenal should give Arteta plenty of flexibility across his frontline.
ARSENAL SHOULD ENVY LIVERPOOL
As Arteta tries to add some depth to his frontline, he is surely looking at Klopp with envy.
The German can choose from Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane – for now, at least – as part of his attacking options, as well as Fabio Carvalho.
In Arteta’s case, he only has Eddie Nketiah, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli at the moment, after losing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette.
If the Gunners are to return to the Champions League, and make a real push in the Europa League next season as well, they’re going to need more attacking depth than that.
