Manchester United are very clear with a plan to reshape their attacking line under Ruben Amorim, already signing Matheus Cunha from Wolves and also pursuing a move to sign Brentford attacker Bryan Mbuemo this summer.
The entire squad is significantly filled with holes that Amorim is desperate to address this summer but there are also positives, like the resurgence of Casemiro towards the end of last season. The Brazilian has returned in tremendous shape ahead of pre-season.
One other attacker that Man Utd have approached to sign this summer is former Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who is currently a free agent. Now, as per Caught Offside, the player wants a wage of £100,000 a week to sign for the Manchester-based club.
United have struggled with having a young striker in Rasmus Hojlund for the last couple of seasons and very clearly value the experience and league familiarity that DCL brings to the table. The 28-year-old was quite a prolific marksman for Everton before his injury troubles, and has a respectable 71 goals in 273 games for the Toffees across all competitions.
With the player currently a free agent, he understands that he has the power to name his price and even though Man Utd would be signing him on a “free transfer”, the salary implications could prove to be a stumbling block in this deal.
One option for Man Utd, to negotiate more favorable terms, would be to agree a contract with Calver-Lewin on a lesser fixed salary but add performance-based incentives that could sweeten the deal and prove to be motivation.
With competition from Matheus Cunha, Hojlund, Zirkzee and potentially even Mbuemo, Calvert-Lewin could be offered a rotational role as the backup striker. He will also help in mentoring the youngsters off the pitch.
One concern that Man Utd might have in this deal is the tall striker’s torrid injury history. That said, last season, he did experience some continuity, and on his day, he could be a handful for any defence in the Premier League to handle.
Ultimately, it could all come down to wages and if the two parties are able to agree on a payment structure. The next few days could be pivotal in this saga, and let’s wait and see how it plays out.
