Manchester United have been linked with a possible Mason Greenwood return in recent transfer speculation, raising questions about whether INEOS could reconsider the club’s previous decision to part ways with the England-born forward.
Greenwood came through Manchester United’s academy and was once regarded as one of the most exciting young attacking talents at Old Trafford. His ability to score with both feet, dribble past defenders and operate in different attacking positions made him an important prospect for the club.
However, his Manchester United career came to an end following serious legal allegations and the club’s subsequent internal investigation. The Crown Prosecution Service discontinued the criminal proceedings in February 2023 after key witnesses withdrew their cooperation. Manchester United later announced that Greenwood would continue his career away from Old Trafford.
He subsequently spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Getafe before completing a permanent move to Marseille in 2024.
His performances in France attracted considerable attention, with Greenwood producing impressive attacking numbers and becoming an important player for the Ligue 1 side.
Reports in January 2026 suggested that Manchester United officials had internally discussed the possibility of bringing him back. The speculation focused partly on a reported buy-back clause included in his Marseille transfer agreement.
Nevertheless, the situation changed significantly in July 2026. Manchester United reportedly informed Marseille that they would not activate the buy-back option, while Greenwood completed a move to Turkish giants Fenerbahçe.
That development makes suggestions of an imminent return to Old Trafford particularly uncertain.
For INEOS, any consideration of Greenwood would involve more than his footballing ability. The club would have to consider its previous decision, the potential reaction from supporters, the wider public response and the impact on Manchester United’s reputation.
Greenwood’s footballing qualities are not difficult to identify. He is comfortable playing on either side of the attack, possesses a powerful shooting technique and has the ability to create goalscoring opportunities without relying entirely on teammates.
Those qualities could attract interest from several clubs, particularly if he continues producing strong performances in Turkey.
However, Manchester United have already demonstrated that his return is not part of their publicly established plans. His departure was agreed after the club concluded that continuing his career away from Old Trafford was the most appropriate outcome.
The reported buy-back option also does not mean United are obligated to bring him back. It simply provides a possible contractual route, subject to the relevant terms and decisions.
For now, supporters should treat claims that INEOS are preparing to re-sign Greenwood with caution. There is no reliable confirmation of an active Manchester United deal, and his transfer to Fenerbahçe remains the latest established development.
The situation could attract further attention if new reports emerge, but a return to Old Trafford would represent a major decision for the club’s leadership.
INEOS must therefore weigh every possible consequence before considering such a move. Until credible confirmation emerges, Manchester United supporters should not assume that Greenwood is returning to the club.
