Former Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger has reportedly offered an interesting assessment of new Arsenal signing Christos Tzolis, with discussions surrounding the Greek forward’s ability to take on defenders and his overall style of play.

Tzolis joined Arsenal from Club Brugge during the summer transfer window in a deal worth around £34 million. The 24-year-old signed a long-term contract with the Premier League champions after an outstanding spell in Belgium, where he established himself as one of the division’s most productive attacking players.

The Greece international arrived at the Emirates after recording impressive numbers for Club Brugge. He scored 17 league goals and provided 23 assists during the 2025/26 campaign, while his overall numbers across his two seasons in Belgium were even more impressive.

However, the discussion surrounding Tzolis has not been limited to his goals and assists. Questions have also been raised about how effectively he can use his dribbling and ball-carrying ability against Premier League defenders.

The Premier League is considerably more physical and demanding than many other European competitions, meaning Tzolis will have to adapt quickly. Defenders in England often give attacking players less time and space, particularly when they receive the ball in wide areas.

Arsenal’s decision to sign him nevertheless reflects their belief that he possesses the qualities required to succeed at the highest level. Sporting director Andrea Berta previously described Tzolis as an extremely versatile attacking player who can operate naturally from the left while also playing across the front line. Arsenal also highlighted his ability to finish with both feet and operate effectively in tight spaces.

That versatility could prove particularly valuable for Mikel Arteta. Rather than being restricted to one position, Tzolis can move across the attacking line and provide another option when Arsenal need to break down a deep defensive block.

The Greek forward has also shown that he can contribute more than just goals. His creative numbers at Club Brugge demonstrate his ability to create opportunities for teammates, while his movement allows him to attack spaces behind defenders.

Wenger’s reported comments have therefore generated discussion among Arsenal supporters, particularly because the former manager has extensive experience assessing attacking players. His opinions on Tzolis are likely to attract considerable attention because of his long association with the club and his reputation for developing technically gifted footballers.

Tzolis, however, has already shown confidence in his own abilities. After completing his move to Arsenal, he expressed his excitement about joining the Premier League champions and said he was determined to contribute goals and assists.

His early Arsenal performances have also provided encouragement. Arsenal’s official website reported that Tzolis had already registered a goal and an assist during his first two pre-season matches and praised the competitive mentality he had seen within Arteta’s squad.

Ultimately, the debate over Tzolis’ dribbling ability will be settled on the pitch. The winger has already demonstrated his attacking productivity in Belgium, but adapting that production to the Premier League represents a new challenge.

For Arsenal, the priority will be helping Tzolis settle into Arteta’s system and giving him the freedom to demonstrate the qualities that convinced the club to invest heavily in him.

If he can reproduce his Club Brugge creativity and goalscoring form at the Emirates, the Greek international could become an important part of Arsenal’s attacking plans for years to come.
