Manchester United have suffered another major injury setback after Carlos Baleba was forced off during their Champions League encounter against Roma on Tuesday night.
The Cameroon international appeared to suffer a hamstring injury early in the second half after making a powerful attacking run towards the opposition penalty area.
Baleba suddenly pulled up in pain while attempting to continue his movement, immediately grabbing his hamstring before falling to the ground. Manchester United medical staff quickly entered the pitch to assess the situation.
The 22-year-old eventually walked off the pitch but appeared visibly disappointed as he made his way towards the tunnel. Manager Michael Carrick introduced Youri Tielemans as his replacement in the 51st minute.
The injury has become a major concern for United supporters, particularly because Baleba had only recently returned to full fitness after suffering an ankle injury earlier in the campaign.
The midfielder joined Manchester United from Brighton during the summer transfer window in a deal worth up to £70 million. His arrival was expected to strengthen the club’s midfield and provide greater physical presence, defensive protection and energy.
However, injuries have already disrupted his beginning at Old Trafford. He missed the opening part of the season because of his ankle problem before making his competitive debut against Tottenham on October 10.
Tuesday’s Champions League appearance was his seventh outing for Manchester United, making the latest setback particularly frustrating.
Following United’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Roma, Carrick provided an update on the midfielder’s condition. The manager admitted that the injury involved Baleba’s hamstring and that the initial signs were concerning.
Carrick explained that the medical team would need to conduct further assessments before providing a clearer recovery timeline.
He said: “I haven’t got any more news on Carlos at this stage but obviously it’s his hamstring and we’ll have to assess it more in the next few days. Initially it doesn’t look great.”
These comments have increased concerns about how long the midfielder could remain unavailable.
Hamstring injuries can vary significantly in severity. Minor problems may require only a short recovery period, while more serious muscle injuries can keep players away from competitive football for several weeks or months.
Until Manchester United complete their medical examinations, it would be premature to confirm the exact length of Baleba’s absence.
His potential absence would be another challenge for Carrick, who needs reliable midfield options during an important period of the campaign.
Kobbie Mainoo, Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos and Mason Mount are among the players who could be considered to fill the gap if Baleba is unavailable.
The Cameroon international’s physical qualities have made him an important option since arriving from Brighton. His ability to recover possession, cover ground and protect the defence provides Manchester United with a different midfield dimension.
United supporters will therefore hope the injury is not as serious as it initially appeared.
The timing is particularly frustrating because the midfielder was beginning to establish himself in the team after overcoming his previous ankle problem.
Manchester United are scheduled to face Aston Villa on November 8 before the November international break. Baleba’s availability for that fixture now looks doubtful following the injury against Roma.
For now, the priority will be completing further medical examinations and ensuring the midfielder receives the appropriate treatment.
United fans will be hoping for positive news and a quick recovery as the club looks to avoid another lengthy absence for one of its important summer signings.
