David Raya is reportedly among the Arsenal players who will be frustrated with Bruno Guimarães’ performance after the Gunners suffered a painful 3-0 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium.
Arsenal entered Saturday’s Premier League fixture with a perfect record after winning their opening four league matches of the season. There was significant confidence around Mikel Arteta’s squad following impressive victories over Sunderland and Napoli.
However, everything changed on the south coast.
Brighton produced a dominant performance and exposed several weaknesses in Arsenal’s team, eventually securing a convincing 3-0 victory. Pascal Groß opened the scoring before Charalampos Kostoulas doubled Brighton’s advantage just before half-time. Chema Andrés then completed the scoring in the second half.
For Raya, who started in goal, the afternoon was particularly difficult.
The Spanish goalkeeper was forced to deal with repeated attacks as Brighton found space around Arsenal’s defensive structure. While Raya made several important saves, including a late stop that prevented Brighton from scoring a fourth, Arsenal’s goalkeeper could do little to prevent the overall collapse.
One of the biggest talking points after the match was Guimarães’ performance.
Guimarães Struggles Against Brighton
Guimarães was given an important starting role by Arteta after making an impressive impact in Arsenal’s previous Premier League victory over Sunderland.

Raya Had Plenty To Worry About
From Raya’s position at the back, Arsenal’s midfield struggles created additional pressure.
A goalkeeper depends heavily on the players in front of him to protect dangerous areas and prevent opponents from having clear opportunities.
Against Brighton, that protection was inconsistent.
The Seagulls were able to move the ball quickly and create openings around Arsenal’s defensive line. Raya had already been called into action early in the match before Brighton eventually took the lead through Groß.
The second goal made the situation even more difficult.
Kostoulas found space and finished before the break, leaving Arsenal with a huge challenge going into the second half.
Raya could be seen attempting to organise those around him, but Arsenal never found the response they needed.
Bruno’s Performance Put Pressure On Arsenal
Guimarães’ role was particularly important because Arteta selected him alongside Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard.
The trio were expected to provide Arsenal with control, creativity and defensive protection.
Instead, Brighton repeatedly disrupted Arsenal’s rhythm.
The home side pressed aggressively and refused to allow Arsenal to settle into their usual possession-based game.
Guimarães attempted to move forward and contribute to Arsenal’s attacking play, but his influence was limited.
According to match statistics, Arsenal managed only a small number of shots as Brighton maintained control of important areas of the game.
That lack of attacking threat inevitably placed additional responsibility on Raya and the defenders.
Raya’s Frustration
Although there is no verified public statement from Raya saying he was unhappy with Guimarães, it is understandable that the goalkeeper would have been frustrated by the team’s collective performance.
Raya has repeatedly demonstrated his importance to Arsenal.
Only one week earlier against Sunderland, he produced a crucial penalty save that helped Arsenal maintain their lead before Guimarães scored at the other end. Arteta specifically praised Raya after that match, describing his contribution as decisive.
Against Brighton, however, Arsenal’s goalkeeper found himself under much greater pressure.
The contrast between the two matches highlights the importance of Arsenal’s midfield structure.
When Arsenal control possession and prevent opponents from progressing through the centre, Raya generally has fewer dangerous situations to deal with.
When that protection disappears, the goalkeeper becomes much more exposed.

Brighton were comfortable and Arsenal struggled to create enough clear opportunities to threaten a comeback.
The substitution should not necessarily be interpreted as a punishment for Guimarães.

Nevertheless, the midfielder will know that he has to improve.
A Difficult Afternoon For Arsenal
It would be unfair to place the entire defeat on Guimarães.
Arsenal had problems across the pitch.
The defence was vulnerable, the attack struggled to create chances and the midfield failed to establish control.
Even Raya himself had a difficult afternoon and was criticised in some post-match player ratings, despite making several saves.
The result was therefore a collective failure rather than the responsibility of one player.
However, Guimarães will naturally attract attention because of the expectations surrounding him.
Arsenal signed him to provide quality, aggression and control in midfield.
His excellent cameo against Sunderland showed what he can offer.
Saturday’s performance showed the opposite.
Guimarães Must Respond
The most important thing for Guimarães now is how he reacts.
One poor performance does not define a player.
The Brazilian has already shown Arsenal supporters that he possesses the quality to make an impact. His goal against Sunderland demonstrated his attacking ability, while his experience at the highest level makes him an important member of Arteta’s squad.
But Arsenal cannot afford repeated performances like the one against Brighton.
The Gunners are competing for major honours, and every player must contribute consistently.
Raya will expect more protection in front of him, while Arteta will expect greater control from his midfield.
Guimarães now has an opportunity to respond in Arsenal’s next match.
The Brighton defeat was a major setback, but the season is still long.
If Guimarães can return to the level he showed against Sunderland, the disappointment at the Amex could quickly become a learning experience.
For now, however, Arsenal must accept that Brighton exposed serious weaknesses.
And Guimarães, alongside several of his teammates, will know that much more is expected from him in the matches ahead.
