Nwaneri steps up with the chance to win the shootout and does so with aplomb, sending Meyer the wrong way, and Arsenal win the shootout 5-4.
Chukweuemeka scores (4-4)
The former Chelsea man receives some boos as he steps up but calmly slots home to keep Dortmund’s hopes alive.
Martinelli scores (4-3)
Meyer goes the right way but there is far too much power on this penalty from Martinelli. Meyer had no chance of saving that one.
Albert misses (3-3)
We have the first penalty miss of this shootout as Meslier guesses the right way and saves what was a pretty poor penalty from Albert. Advantage Arsenal.
Hincapie scores (3-3)
A few stutters in the run-up but Hincapie slots home into the bottom left corner, with Meyer going the wrong way.
Yamamoto scores (2-3)
He came on right at the end of the game to take a penalty and rewards the decision from his manager to do so as he lifts it over Meslier diving to his left.
Vieira scores (2-2)
Another penalty scored in the left corner. Meyer again guesses the right way but cannot prevent Vieira.
Reggiani scores (1-2)
There is a bit of a stutter in the run-up as Reggiani stares down Meslier and sends the Arsenal keeper the wrong way, finding the same corner as Sabitzer and Jesus.
Jesus scores (1-1)
Meyer in the Dortmund goal guesses the right way but Jesus lifts it over him with a quality penalty.
Sabitzer scores (0-1)
Meslier takes an age to get ready but Sabitzer does not care, sending the Arsenal keeper the wrong way and emphatically finding the left corner.

Right, we are ready for penalties. Dortmund will take first, with Sabitzer to take their opening penalty up against Meslier.
Full time
Arsenal have the ball in the net in the final few seconds and think they have a very late equaliser but Martinelli’s effort is ruled out for an offside. Meyer will be a relieved man in the Dortmund goal as he allowed Martinelli’s shot to go through him.
The final whistle is then blown and Dortmund have beaten Arsenal 3-2 to take the Emirates Cup.

Arsenal had some problems from corners the other day against Betis and they concede minutes after getting a goal back. Arsenal fail to deal with a corner from the right and the ball ends up with Gadou at the back post. Gadou takes one touch before finding the net, despite the best efforts of numerous Arsenal defenders on the line.

Should Inacio have gone down? The young Italian is played in behind the Arsenal defence and has Calafiori all over his back. Inacio ends up losing possession on the edge of the Arsenal penalty area but had he gone down Calafiori could have been in trouble.
GOAL! Nwaneri gets goal back from Arsenal
Mikel Arteta’s side reduce Dortmund’s lead to just the one goal. Tzolis cuts it back from the left side of the box and picks out Nwaneri eight yards out from goal in the centre of the box. Nwaneri makes no mistake, smashing home and Arsenal are back in this game.

That is good defending from Nwaneri. Just as Chukwuemeka was lining up a shot just outside the box, Nwaneri tracks back and steals it off Chukwuemeka.

White is found on the right side of the box but is denied by Meyer in the Dortmund goal. The subsequent corner comes to nothing.

Dortmund are not far off scoring their third a couple of minutes into this second half. The ball is rolled into the feet of Nmecha outside the box. The German midfielder, who scored a stunner for his country against Curacao at the World Cup, nearly picks out the top corner but it goes just over Meslier’s bar.

Dortmund have brought on former Chelsea and Aston Villa man Chukwuemeka on at the break. Arsenal have made an alteration at the break with Meslier replacing Kepa in goal.

Half-time
The first half in north London is brought to an end and it is the visitors Borussia Dortmund who lead 2-0 at the break courtesy of goals from Inacio and Karetsas.

Gabriel is into the book. He is in possession but his touch allows the ball to slightly get away from him. He then slides in to try and retain possession and catches Karetsas.

Nmecha eyes up a repeat of Dortmund’s first goal as he tries to find the run of Inacio into the Arsenal box but this time they cannot quite link up.

After Gyokeres was fouled, Arsenal have a free-kick inside the Dortmund half. Tzolis clips it in and picks out Havertz in space inside the Dortmund box but the German is a fair way out from goal and his header is easily saved by Meyer.

Arsenal want a penalty but the appeals are turned down. It all stems from good work defensively from Tzolis, who drives forward from the edge of his own box and then finds Gyokeres out to his left. Tzolis continues his run into the Dortmund half and is found. Tzolis then finds Gyokeres again, who goes down inside the Dortmund penalty area after a challenge from Gadou but the Swedish striker went down far too easily and that is never a penalty.

Dowman does brilliantly down Arsenal’s right to get past Beier but then goes down just before the byline. Referee Chris Kavanagh blows his whistle and Beier cannot believe it. Replays show that Dowman threw himself to the ground and it was a dive.
Tzolis takes the free-kick and delivers it to the far post, where Gabriel meets it but his powerful header goes over the bar. The Brazilian probably should have scored.

GOAL! Karetsas doubles Dortmund’s lead
What a finish that is to put the German side 2-0 up! 18-year-old Karetsas, who has joined Dortmund from Genk this summer, is afforded too much space outside the Arsenal penalty area as he drives towards the box and punishes the hosts for that, curling a sublime shot into the far corner.

Odegaard slides a clever pass into the right channel to pick out the run of Gyokeres towards the Dortmund box. Mane though slides in with a perfectly-timed challenge to take it off Gyokeres. Mane had to time that right with the challenge being right on the edge of his own box.

Arsenal hit the bar. Dowman does well down Arsenal’s right to drive into the Dortmund box and cuts it back to Gyokeres. The Swedish striker takes a few touches before getting his shot away, which clips the top of the bar.

A dangerous cross from the left comes all the way to Svensson at the back post but he lacked conviction with his header and it goes wide. Perhaps he should be hitting the target.
Down at the other end Arsenal have a headed chance of their own. Havertz clips in a cross from the left and picks out Gyokeres. The Swede is a fair way out from goal and his header goes wide.

Should Havertz have done better with this opportunity? The German is played in down the right channel and has Gyokeres calling for the cross in space in the centre of the box. Havertz tries to find him but Meyer is out to smother it. Had Havertz found Gyokeres, it would likely have been a simple tap-in for the Swede.

Odegaard appears to be through one-on-one but then goes down just outside the Dortmund box. Mane pleads his innocence but referee Chris Kavanagh does not agree, giving a free-kick. If this was a competitive game, Mane would potentially have been sent off.
Gyokeres will take and opts for power over accuracy. It is safe to say his effort is terrible, blazing over the bar and missing the target by some margin.

Calafiori trips Bellingham as Dortmund attempted to counter. If this was a competitive fixture, Calafiori likely would have been booked for that foul.

Bellingham and Havertz are involved in quite the collision. Both players go for the header and Havertz just gets to it first. Havertz is awarded the foul and is ok.

The German side take the lead inside the opening seven minutes. Nmecha slides a lovely pass through the Arsenal defensive line to pick out the run of Inacio into the Arsenal penalty area. It is a clinical finish from Inacio, who slides his effort into the far corner,

Gyokeres wins Arsenal their first corner of the game out on the right. Odegaard’s delivery into the near post causes problems for Dortmund and forces Dortmund keeper Meyer to tip over his own bar for another Arsenal corner. Meyer this time punches Odegaard’s delivery away and Dortmund clear their lines.
Nearly ready for action
Moments after Bruno Guimaraes’ unveiling, both sides now emerge from the tunnel and we are moments away from kick-off at the Emirates.

Just before the two sides emerge the tunnel, there is a special guest who comes out first in the form of Bruno Guimaraes. Chants of “Bruno! Bruno!” ring around the Emirates as the Arsenal fans get their first glimpse of him in an Arsenal shirt, although the Brazilian is not involved today.

‘Why Arsenal have signed Bruno Guimaraes five years after rejecting him’
When Bruno Guimarães signed for Newcastle United from Lyon in January 2022, much was made of the idea that he had rejected Arsenal in favour of a move to St James’ Park. The Brazilian played along with it, posting a video on his social media pages which featured multiple newspaper headlines about Arsenal wanting to buy him.
The Newcastle fans, still delirious about the recent takeover by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, understandably lapped it up. Their dream was to overthrow the established powers in English football, and the capture of Guimarães was regarded as a sign that they were truly ready to challenge teams of Arsenal’s stature and wealth.
Even the lyrics to the midfielder’s chant referred to the north Londoners, as Newcastle fans sang that Guimarães “could have signed for Arsenal” but chose instead to play “in the famous black and white”.
Guimaraes move confirmed
Yesterday Arsenal announced the signing of Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle for £75m on a four-year deal, with the option of a further year. Here is what the Brazilian had to say:
“I feel good, I feel amazing. I am glad for the opportunity. Since the first time I spoke to (Andrea) Berta and Mikel (Arteta) I was excited. I just felt inside of me that I need a new challenge in my life and I think to be an Arsenal player is going to be an exciting challenge in my life.
“I think after playing two World Cups, I am at the point of my life, I think I need a challenge like this. I want to win trophies, I want to make history and I think I am in the right place to do it. I am so excited to start. We have tough games to play this season so the squad is going to be very, very important and I am hopeful we can achieve our dreams.”
