Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana has been linked with a possible return to Old Trafford, but his future remains uncertain as Trabzonspor reportedly explore the possibility of signing him permanently.

The Cameroon international is currently spending his second consecutive season on loan at the Turkish club after falling out of favour at Manchester United.

Onana joined Manchester United from Inter Milan in 2023, arriving with high expectations following his impressive performances in Italy and his Champions League final appearance with Inter.

However, his time at Old Trafford was far from straightforward. Several costly mistakes and inconsistent performances eventually affected his position in the team, leading to competition for the goalkeeper’s place.

The arrival of Senne Lammens further complicated his situation, with the Belgian establishing himself as Manchester United’s first-choice goalkeeper.

Why Onana could return to Old Trafford

Onana still has a contract with Manchester United, and his current loan agreement does not include an automatic option for Trabzonspor to purchase him.

This means the goalkeeper could technically return to Old Trafford when his loan expires in 2027 if both clubs do not reach another agreement.

Manchester United may therefore have to make an important decision about his future.

The club must consider whether to reintegrate the experienced goalkeeper into the squad or negotiate another transfer arrangement.

Onana has previously demonstrated that he possesses excellent qualities, particularly his ability to distribute the ball from the back and organise defenders.

However, regaining his position at Manchester United would not be straightforward because Lammens has become an important part of the team’s plans.

Trabzonspor want to keep the goalkeeper

Reports from Turkey suggest Trabzonspor are interested in securing Onana’s services permanently.

The goalkeeper impressed during his previous spell with the club, helping them finish third in the Turkish league and win the Turkish Cup.

His performances have encouraged the Turkish side to consider making another attempt to keep him beyond the current loan agreement.

Turkish Football reported in October that Trabzonspor had opened discussions with Manchester United over a possible permanent transfer.

The reported proposal was around €4 million, although there has been no official confirmation that an agreement has been reached.

Manchester United face an important decision

Manchester United must carefully consider the financial and sporting implications of Onana’s situation.

The goalkeeper remains an experienced international, but the club may prefer to move forward with Lammens as their main option.

Allowing Onana to return without a clear role could create another difficult situation for the coaching staff.

On the other hand, keeping an experienced goalkeeper in the squad could provide useful competition if circumstances change.

Manager Michael Carrick will also have to consider the goalkeeper’s relationship with the club and whether he fits into the team’s long-term plans.

Onana still has something to prove

At 30, Onana still has several years of football ahead of him. His experience at Inter Milan, Manchester United and Trabzonspor means he understands the demands of playing for major clubs.

His immediate priority, however, should be maintaining consistent performances in Turkey.

A successful season could strengthen his negotiating position and attract interest from other clubs.

For Manchester United supporters, the possibility of seeing Onana back at Old Trafford will generate mixed reactions.

Some fans may welcome another opportunity for him to prove himself, while others believe the club should move on and focus on building around Lammens.

For now, no return has been officially confirmed. Onana remains a Manchester United player on loan at Trabzonspor, and his long-term future will depend on negotiations between the two clubs.
