Arsenal are reportedly exploring an ambitious move for Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez that could involve Viktor Gyokeres heading in the opposite direction.

According to The Times, with the story subsequently relayed by Marca, the Gunners have considered whether a player-plus-cash proposal could persuade Atletico Madrid to negotiate for the Argentina international.

The report claims Arsenal would be willing to offer a significant transfer fee alongside Gyokeres in what would rank among the biggest deals of the window if it materialised.

There is no suggestion that a formal bid has been submitted, however, with talks understood to be at an exploratory stage.

Atletico Madrid have consistently maintained that Alvarez is not for sale.

The Spanish club regard the 26-year-old as one of the pillars of Diego Simeone’s project and have repeatedly dismissed speculation surrounding his future despite interest from several European giants.

Barcelona have also been linked with the forward, although Atletico are understood to have little interest in selling to a domestic rival.

That has prompted reports that an overseas club such as Arsenal would stand a stronger chance if the Madrid side were ever to reconsider their position.

Alvarez has established himself as one of Europe’s elite attackers since leaving Manchester City, with his versatility allowing him to operate as a centre-forward, second striker or attacking midfielder.

He further enhanced his reputation by helping Argentina reach the 2026 World Cup final before they were edged out 1-0 by Spain.

Mikel Arteta is believed to be a long-time admirer of the forward’s intelligence, work rate and tactical flexibility, qualities that would fit naturally into Arsenal’s fluid attacking system.

The proposed inclusion of Gyokeres is the most surprising aspect of the report.

The Sweden international enjoyed an outstanding first season in north London after joining Arsenal from Sporting CP, establishing himself as the club’s leading goalscorer and an integral part of Arteta’s Premier League-winning side.

His goalscoring exploits and all-round performances have made him one of the first names on the teamsheet, making the prospect of Arsenal offering him in exchange for another forward an unexpected development.

While Atletico have been credited with admiring Gyokeres, there is no indication they have invited Arsenal to make such a proposal.

Instead, the reports suggest Arsenal believe a player-plus-cash package could represent the only realistic route to opening negotiations for Alvarez.

For now, though, Atletico’s public stance has not changed.

Unless the Spanish club soften their position, Arsenal’s reported interest is likely to remain one of the summer’s more intriguing transfer stories rather than a deal on the verge of completion.
