Mikel Arteta was reportedly left frustrated by Noni Madueke’s missed opportunity during Arsenal’s Champions League victory over Napoli, despite the Gunners eventually securing a valuable 1-0 win in Italy.
Arsenal produced a disciplined and dominant performance at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, controlling large periods of the match and creating several opportunities. However, their inability to convert those chances kept Napoli in the contest until the closing stages.
Martin Ødegaard eventually rescued Arsenal by scoring the decisive goal in the 75th minute, giving Arteta’s side a perfect start to their Champions League campaign. However, the Arsenal manager was believed to be unhappy that his players failed to put the game beyond doubt earlier.
Madueke was one of the players who had an opportunity to make the scoreline more comfortable.
The England international entered the game in the 73rd minute, replacing Bukayo Saka, and immediately provided Arsenal with additional pace and attacking threat. His introduction gave Napoli another problem to deal with, particularly as the Italian side began committing more players forward in search of an equaliser.
But Madueke was unable to take advantage of one of his best opportunities.
According to the match record, Madueke had a left-footed effort from inside the penalty area saved by Napoli goalkeeper Vanja Milinković-Savić in the 85th minute. He later saw another attempt blocked.
For Arteta, those moments represented exactly why Arsenal needed to be more clinical.

The Gunners controlled possession, pushed Napoli deep and consistently attempted to create openings around the Italian club’s penalty area. Yet every missed opportunity increased the possibility that Napoli could punish them with a counterattack.
Arteta acknowledged after the match that Arsenal should have scored more goals.
The manager praised his players for their attitude, courage and quality but admitted that it was frustrating to see so many big chances wasted.
That frustration would have been particularly understandable when Madueke missed his late opportunity.
With Napoli chasing an equaliser, Arsenal had chances to exploit the spaces appearing behind the home side’s defence. Madueke had the speed and ability to attack those spaces, but his effort was stopped by the goalkeeper.
Had Arsenal been leading by two or three goals at that stage, the miss would probably have been forgotten almost immediately.
Instead, because the margin remained just one goal, every missed opportunity carried greater importance.
Madueke still made an impact
Despite the missed chance, Madueke should not be judged solely on his finishing.
The winger was introduced late in the match and had limited time to influence proceedings. His presence helped Arsenal maintain an attacking threat after Saka left the pitch, while his movement created problems for Napoli’s defenders.
Madueke also played a role in another Arsenal opportunity shortly after his own effort was saved. He assisted Christos Tzolis, whose attempt was blocked.
Those moments demonstrated that the former Chelsea winger remained involved in Arsenal’s attacking play even though he could not find the back of the net.
For Arteta, the most important lesson may therefore be about decision-making and composure rather than simply finishing.
Arsenal cannot afford wastefulness
The Napoli match highlighted one of the biggest challenges Arsenal could face during their European campaign.
Against stronger opponents, Arsenal may not receive as many chances as they did in Naples.
Creating opportunities is one part of winning football matches. Converting them is another.
Arsenal’s dominance against Napoli could easily have produced a much more comfortable scoreline. Instead, Ødegaard’s 75th-minute strike remained the only goal of the contest.
The Norwegian captain once again demonstrated his importance to Arteta’s project.
Ødegaard has started the season in excellent form and his ability to arrive in dangerous positions has added another dimension to Arsenal’s attack. His goal ultimately prevented the missed chances from becoming a major talking point after the final whistle.
Arteta’s message to Madueke
Although Madueke’s miss was frustrating, Arteta is unlikely to lose faith in the winger.
The Arsenal manager has consistently demanded that his attacking players be brave, direct and decisive. Madueke possesses qualities that can be extremely valuable to the team, particularly his pace, one-on-one ability and willingness to attack defenders.
What Arteta will want from him is greater efficiency when the opportunity arrives.
The Arsenal boss knows that Madueke will have more chances during the season. The challenge will be ensuring that the winger learns from difficult moments and becomes more reliable in front of goal.
A missed opportunity can become a problem if a player allows it to affect his confidence.
Arteta will instead want Madueke to respond positively.
Competition for places is increasing
Madueke also understands that Arsenal’s squad contains considerable competition for attacking positions.
Saka remains one of the club’s most important players, while Arsenal have other options capable of operating in wide areas. Every substitute appearance therefore represents an opportunity for Madueke to demonstrate that he deserves more minutes.
His cameo against Napoli showed both sides of his game.
He brought energy and attacking intent, but his missed chance prevented him from putting his name on the scoresheet.
For a player trying to establish himself as a key member of Arsenal’s squad, those moments can be extremely important.
A warning rather than a disaster
Ultimately, Madueke’s miss did not cost Arsenal anything.
The Gunners returned to London with three points and a clean sheet after defeating Napoli 1-0. Ødegaard’s goal ensured that the missed chances were remembered as a warning rather than a disaster.
However, Arteta will know that Arsenal cannot rely on narrow victories every time they dominate an opponent.
The Champions League is unforgiving, and stronger teams will punish Arsenal if they repeatedly fail to take their chances.

The winger has the talent to become an important player for Arsenal, but he must improve his composure in decisive moments.
Arteta may have been frustrated by what happened in Naples, but the manager will also recognize the bigger picture.
Arsenal won.
They created chances.
They defended well.
And they left Italy with maximum points.
Now, the expectation will be for Madueke and his teammates to become more ruthless in front of goal.
If they can combine their strong performances with greater clinical finishing, Arsenal could become an even more dangerous force in Europe this season.
