Manchester United have surprisingly secured the signing of experienced Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans.

Moments later, Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed that a deal has been reached, with United triggering the Belgian’s €41 million release clause, while adding his trademark ‘here we go’.

Why did Man United go for Tielemans?
Tielemans is a versatile midfielder capable of covering several roles. He might be most comfortable as No.6. But unlike Casemiro, who is considered a natural destroyer and ball winner, the 29-year-old can be described as a deep-lying playmaker.

The Belgian international is also capable of acting as a box-to-box midfielder. Therefore, his role could vary based on the identity of his midfield partner, whether it’s Kobbie Mainoo, Andrey Santos, or any other player that United might sign later in the summer.

Moreover, Tielemans has vast Premier League experience under his belt. He began his career at Anderlecht and then rose to prominence at Monaco, earning himself a move to Leicester City in 2019.

After years with the foxes, Aston Villa poached his services on a free transfer in 2023, and he was a key figure in Unai Emery’s tactical jigsaw in the past three years. He is also Belgium’s captain, with 90 caps to his name and 15 international goals.
