Manchester United suffered a 2-0 loss to Hull City in their opening game of the 2025/26 Premier League season. Here are our player ratings from the game.

Senne Lammens 7 – United’s best player, which tells you all you need to know about the performance. Argubaly kept the score from being even more embarrassing with three brilliant saves in the first-half, but couldn’t do much about the set-piece goals that Hull netted. The hosts came close to scoring again when Crooks was sent through on goal, but Lammens came rushing out of his line to clear the danger.
Noussair Mazraoui 5 – A mixed display. He produced an important headed interception early on to deny McBurnie a shot at goal, but he struggled alongside his defensive colleagues to cope with Hull’s aggressive, physical approach.
Harry Maguire 5 – Mostly same as Mazraoui. Just not quite good enough on a sobering opening day for United.
Ayden Heaven 2 – McBurnie ran rings around him! Was given an early warning by the striker when he towered over him to head the ball home, but Lammens spared his blushes with an excellent stop. Was at fault for Hull’s opener, losing McBurnie. His defensive work was well below par.
Luke Shaw 4 – He offered little going forward, aside from a couple of curling crosses that came to nothing.
Andrey Santos 5 – His performance was markedly inferior to his pre-season showings. He was wasteful in possession and appeared unable to handle the aggressive approach of the newly-promoted outfit. A significant reality check for the Brazilian.
Youri Tielemans 3 – Disappointing is an understatement. Just never got up to the speed of the game. Outran, outmuscled and just bullied in the middle of the park. Clearly not fit enough. He will be eager to put his competitive debut at the back of his mind.
Bruno Fernandes 4 – Offered very little except a few shots from distance and lacked the influence he usually brings to the table. Another who doesn’t look fit.
Bryan Mbeumo 6 – United’s most threatening player. Got a few dangerous shots off, the most lethal one of which came off in the second half, but he was thwarted by a good save. One of the few who can perhaps hold their head high.
Patrick Dorgu 3 – Muted and of zero consequence to Hull. Rightly taken off at the interval.
Matheus Cunha 3 – Same as Dorgu. Did next to nothing, only showing some signs of life in the second half before his substitution.
Substitutes
Marcus Rashford 5 – He was lively in the second half, though his impact proved insignificant to the overall outcome for United.
Benjamin Sesko 4 – Made no difference.
Kobbie Mainoo 5- Just OK.
Diogo Dalot 4 – Turned once, leading to a Hull counter-attack.
Shea Lacey 5 – OK.
