Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini has acknowledged Manchester United’s impressive second-half performance after watching his team throw away a two-goal advantage in their Champions League encounter at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

Manchester United produced a remarkable comeback to secure a 3-2 victory, with Matheus Cunha scoring twice after Bruno Fernandes had reduced the deficit from the penalty spot.

Despite the disappointment of losing, Gasperini recognised the pressure United created after the break and admitted that his players struggled to cope with the home side’s attacking intensity.

Roma initially looked comfortable after taking a 2-0 lead inside the opening 17 minutes. Matías Soulé opened the scoring before Donyell Malen converted a penalty to put the Italian side in a commanding position.

United struggled to find their rhythm during the opening 45 minutes, with Roma appearing capable of securing an important away victory.

However, the atmosphere at Old Trafford changed dramatically after the interval. Michael Carrick’s players returned with greater determination, increased their pressing intensity and began creating dangerous opportunities around the Roma penalty area.

The turning point came when Cunha won a penalty that Bruno Fernandes eventually converted after the initial attempt was ordered to be retaken.

Speaking after the match, Gasperini explained that the penalty gave Manchester United a significant boost and changed the atmosphere of the contest.

He admitted that his players were unable to maintain their composure after United gained momentum.

The Roma manager also recognised the difficulty of playing at Old Trafford, explaining that Manchester United can create dangerous periods of pressure, particularly when their supporters become involved in the contest.

United continued attacking, and their persistence eventually produced an equaliser in the 83rd minute. A defensive mistake allowed Cunha to score from close range, bringing the home side level.

Just three minutes later, the Brazilian completed the comeback with an excellent finish following a pass from academy youngster Shea Lacey.

Gasperini admitted that his team struggled to contain United’s forwards during the second half. He also criticised his side’s inability to maintain defensive organisation when the home team increased its intensity.

The Italian manager suggested that Roma should have used longer passes more effectively to escape United’s high press instead of allowing the hosts to continue building pressure.

He also acknowledged that his players needed to manage the tempo of the match better when their opponents were pushing forward.

Although Gasperini did not hide his disappointment, he believes the defeat can provide valuable lessons for Roma’s future European matches.

He explained that playing against a strong opponent in an atmosphere like Old Trafford would help his players understand what is required to compete at the highest level.

For Manchester United, the victory was an important moment after a difficult run of results. Carrick’s players showed determination, attacking quality and the ability to respond when the situation appeared almost impossible.

Cunha was undoubtedly the outstanding performer, but the contributions of Fernandes, Lacey and the other players who helped United complete the comeback were also important.

Lacey’s involvement was particularly encouraging because the young academy graduate provided the assist for Cunha’s winning goal.

However, Cunha’s evening ended controversially after he received a second yellow card in stoppage time. United were forced to defend their advantage with ten players but managed to hold on.

Gasperini will now expect his Roma players to learn from the experience and avoid repeating the defensive mistakes that cost them the victory.

Meanwhile, Manchester United supporters will hope the result becomes a turning point in their season.

The comeback demonstrated the importance of determination, tactical adjustments and taking advantage of opportunities. Although Gasperini left Old Trafford disappointed, his post-match assessment showed recognition of the pressure and attacking quality that helped United turn the match around.
