Arsenal midfielder Bruno Guimarães continues to face enormous expectations following his big-money move from Newcastle United, with questions being raised about the level of performance required to help Mikel Arteta’s side compete for major trophies.
Former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has previously praised Arsenal’s overall approach, defending the club against criticism of its playing style. However, there is no verified public statement confirming that Rooney has specifically told Guimarães to improve his performances.
Nevertheless, the Brazilian midfielder knows that joining a club with Arsenal’s ambitions comes with significant responsibility.
Arsenal completed the signing of Guimarães from Newcastle in August 2026 for a reported £75 million. The midfielder arrived with an excellent reputation after establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s most influential central midfielders.
His arrival was expected to strengthen Arsenal’s midfield and provide Arteta with another experienced option alongside Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi and Martin Ødegaard.
Guimarães brings several important qualities to the team. He is comfortable receiving possession under pressure, capable of making progressive passes and strong in physical midfield battles.
However, expectations are particularly high because Arsenal are looking to maintain their position among England’s leading clubs.
Rooney’s standards and Arsenal’s expectations
Rooney understands what it takes to play for a club competing for major honours. During his Manchester United career, he experienced the pressure of delivering consistently, even when opponents made life difficult.
The former England international has also demonstrated that he is willing to speak openly about standards in modern football.
His comments defending Arsenal against criticism earlier this year showed that he recognises the importance of winning and competing at the highest level.
For Guimarães, the challenge is to demonstrate that his quality can make Arsenal even stronger.
Why Guimarães is important to Arteta
One of the biggest reasons Arsenal wanted the Brazilian was his versatility. He can operate as a defensive midfielder or play further forward as a box-to-box midfielder.
That flexibility gives Arteta several tactical possibilities.
The Premier League’s analysis of his signing highlighted his defensive contribution, passing ability and goal threat. During the 2025/26 campaign, he recorded impressive numbers in tackles, ground duels and ball recoveries compared with Arsenal’s other central midfield options.
His experience could also prove valuable during difficult matches when Arsenal need someone capable of controlling the tempo and protecting the defence.
A big responsibility at the Emirates
Arsenal supporters will expect Guimarães to deliver consistent performances, particularly in important matches against direct title rivals.
The Brazilian must combine his physical qualities with intelligent decision-making, accurate distribution and greater influence in attacking situations.
He also needs to build a strong understanding with Rice and Ødegaard. A successful midfield partnership could become one of the biggest advantages Arsenal have during the campaign.
The recent 1-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield demonstrated the importance of midfield discipline and defensive organisation. Arsenal needed concentration and determination to protect Kai Havertz’s early goal and secure all three points.
Such performances will be essential if Arteta wants his team to remain competitive throughout the season.
The message for Guimarães
Although Rooney has not been verified as making a personal demand of Guimarães, the expectations surrounding the Arsenal midfielder are clear.
He has the experience, talent and quality to become an important figure at the Emirates. However, he must continue proving his value through consistent performances.
Arsenal have invested heavily in building a squad capable of winning trophies. Guimarães now has an opportunity to justify that investment and establish himself as one of the most influential midfielders in English football.
