Ahead of Noni Madueke’s return to Stamford Bridge, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has praised the young winger and his resilience.
Madueke will return to his former club when Arsenal face Chelsea on Sunday, following a summer move to north London.
Ahead of the transfer, there had been some opposition from some Arsenal fans, with a petition even set up online in protest against the signing, but Arteta insists that it only gave him more drive to help Madueke succeed at the club.
“If anything it gave me more conviction and more will to help and do everything we possibly could to make this relationship work and prepare everything around him in the best possible way,” he declared.
“I think that [opposition] lasted a very short period of time and immediately we have completely the opposite reaction [from the fans] which I think he valued, respected and it was like fuel to him.”
Following his debut goal in the Champions League in midweek, Arteta reiterated the positive impact the 23-year-old has had since his arrival at Emirates, even with his recent injury spell.
“I’m very pleased with him since the day that he came, his attitude, the energy that he’s brought to the team,” Arteta said. “[He’s] another kind of threat, his capacity to play [on the] right and left and his skillset is different to what we had.”
He added: “We saw that again on Wednesday [against Bayern], starting in one position and changing to the other position and being very efficient, and we’re very pleased to have him back.”
