Arsenal striker Kai Havertz has given Declan Rice special recognition after scoring the winning goal in Arsenal’s 1-0 Premier League victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
The German international praised his teammate for providing the excellent assist that helped Arsenal secure three important points and end their 14-year wait for a Premier League victory at Anfield.
Havertz scored the only goal of the encounter in the 16th minute after receiving a brilliant low cross from Rice. The England international made an intelligent overlapping run before delivering the ball across Liverpool’s penalty area, allowing Havertz to finish from close range.
Although Havertz received the official goal credit, he was quick to acknowledge Rice’s contribution when speaking after the match.
Speaking to Sky Sports, the Arsenal forward explained that most of the credit belonged to his teammate because of the quality of the cross.
“I think you know 90 per cent of the goal belongs to that man (Rice),” Havertz said.
He also praised Rice’s movement and delivery, explaining that the midfielder had provided the perfect cross and made his job much easier.
The comments were a clear demonstration of the respect between two important members of Arteta’s squad.
Rice makes the difference at Anfield
Rice was one of Arsenal’s most influential players throughout the encounter. Apart from providing the decisive assist, he worked tirelessly in midfield and helped the team maintain its defensive organisation when Liverpool increased the pressure.
Liverpool attempted to respond immediately after falling behind, creating several dangerous situations before half-time. Florian Wirtz came particularly close to equalising when his free-kick struck the crossbar.
However, Arsenal remained disciplined and refused to allow the home side to find an equaliser.
Rice’s contribution was therefore about much more than the assist. His energy, defensive awareness and ability to support attacks helped Arsenal control important moments of the contest.
Havertz celebrates an important return to scoring
The goal was also significant for Havertz personally because it ended his nine-game scoring drought.
The German forward had faced questions about his recent performances, but his decisive finish demonstrated his importance to Arteta’s attacking plans.
Scoring at Anfield in such an important match will undoubtedly provide a confidence boost as Arsenal prepare for their upcoming fixtures.
Havertz also explained how much the victory meant to the entire club, particularly because Arsenal had not won a Premier League match at Anfield since 2012.
He described the achievement as special and expressed happiness that the team had delivered a result that supporters deserved.
Arsenal send a strong message in the title race
The victory moved Arsenal three points clear at the top of the Premier League table, strengthening their position in the early title race.
More importantly, the performance demonstrated the team’s ability to defend under pressure and secure important results away from home.
Mikel Arteta will be particularly pleased with the relationship between his attacking players and midfielders. Rice’s ability to contribute in both areas gives Arsenal an important advantage against difficult opponents.
Liverpool, meanwhile, struggled to find a way through Arsenal’s defensive organisation despite enjoying periods of pressure.
Rice receives recognition from his teammate
Havertz’s generous comments after the final whistle highlighted the strong team spirit within the Arsenal dressing room.
Rather than taking all the attention for scoring the winning goal, the German forward made sure Rice received recognition for creating the opportunity.
The England midfielder has become an important figure at the Emirates since joining from West Ham United, and performances like Sunday’s explain why Arsenal value him so highly.
For Havertz, the goal will be remembered as a decisive moment in a historic victory. For Rice, the assist was another reminder of his enormous influence on Arteta’s team.
Together, they helped Arsenal achieve a result that could prove important in their pursuit of another Premier League title.
